Free Art Notebooking Pack – Grade 2 (Other Grades too)

August 11, 2016 | 6 Comments
This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see my full disclosure policy.

This art series I began a few years ago to fill a need in my homeschool year and today I’m so TICKLED because I have the last grade, which is the 2nd grade finished.

Free 2nd Grade Art Curriculum and notebooking pages. Pssst, there are grades 1 -8 too. Grab them over @ Tina's Dynamic Homeschool Plus
Homeschool Art Curriculum Notebooking

You will need two things to get started.

Homeschool Art Curriculum & Notebooking Pages

Then choose a grade level or several depending on how many kids you have.

Yep, I have free printables for all the grades offered, which are Grades 1 – 8.

Free Homeschool Art Curriculum and Notebooking Pages. Grades 1 to 8 @ Tina's Dynamic Homeschool Plus

And don’t forget that you can use just one packet with ALL of your kids (print one copy for each child) and save your sanity by teaching them all together. Or, print one copy for your older child and do another level with your younger children. You decide, you’re the teacher.

Also, I wanted you to know that even though the free art curriculum that I am following to create printables divides the art into grade levels,  I did not create the art notebooking pages baby-ish.

This way whatever the ages of your children are, they can use any grade level guide of their choosing along with the printables I created to have a complete art program for each year.

If you cover one artist per month, then each grade level will take you one year. So free art for a year!

One last thing I need to remind you is that I also create TWO SETS of the SAME art notebooking page, but each set is slightly different.

I like things perfect workable and to have options and I love for you to have them too.

Look below at the graphic I created to show how each set is slightly different.

One set has all text boxes in case you have a kid or two like I do that doesn’t want to sketch the art.

Especially at the high school level, my oldest son just wanted to make it more about art history.

So he wasn’t interest in sketching every piece. He just wanted to read the background information about each artist, read about the artwork and move one. Oh yes, I used some of these packets for high school art credit.

The second set has one small sketch box instead of the text box because then I have another kid who wants to sketch the art that we were learning about. Too, I keep the sketch box not too big so it doesn’t become a project to sigh about.

How to Use - Art Notebooking Pages 1

So the art is the SAME for both pages.

Too, this allows you to choose from either set depending on the time you have for that month. For example, one piece my sons may want to write, so I would print off that page. The next art piece they would want to sketch so I would print off that page from the other set.

Give your child options and don’t think you have to use ALL the same pages from one set. I mixed and match depending on the mood for the day or month.

I have a more pictures from each set to show you. This is how the pages look from the set that has sketch boxes and

3rd grade Artist Study Packet 1 with 3 text and 1 sketch box 23rd grade Artist Study Packet 1 with 3 text and 1 sketch box 3

this is how the pages look from the set that has ALL text boxes.

3rd grade Artist Study Packet 1 with 4 text boxes 13rd grade Artist Study Packet 1 with 4 text boxes 2

Again, BOTH sets have the same art and are the same except for that one box.

2017 Year Around Planning Schedule Waves @ Tina's Dynamic Homeschool Plus

Homeschool Planning Forms that Rock and are Beautiful

I never want you to get confused with the different types of forms that I offer each year.

First, remember to visit my Curriculum Planner Category here on my blog to see all the latest printables. Sometimes I don’t always have them up on each  STEP (or page) they normally go on because it takes me some time to get them up.

Also, remember that I offer this homeschool planning form 2 ways. One way is following the academic year from July to June and the other way is the physical year from January to December.

The reason I offer it both ways is that not only do we start our homeschool year at different times, but I have followers in other countries which follow a physical year.

In addition, for many years I followed the physical year to begin and end our homeschool year because it felt more natural.

Curriculum Planner Pages

This is the first option color choice, which I named Waves (I have to name my forms) for the 2017 physical year.

Too, remember it is NOT a calendar for glancing or writing down your appointments. You can grab those here on Step 2. Choose Calendar/Appointment Keepers.

This form is prepared each year for you to highlight which days and weeks you will homeschool and which ones you will not.

In addition, you track the days and weeks and use the key at the bottom to see if you met your goals.

It is a one page glance to help you stay on track when it comes to scheduling. Don’t try to write down appointments here, I give you plenty of room to do on the Appointment Keeper.

When You REALLY Have No Money for Homeschool Curriculum – Dynamic Reader Question

May 29, 2015 | 18 Comments
This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see my full disclosure policy.

No matter how long it takes me to reply to my emails, every email I get is important to me.

I am not made of stone and so when an email touches me to my heart and brings tears, I have to share it with you too. (Of course I always get permission first and I never share any private information so I can preserve dignity, privacy and respect for my followers.)

I am hoping that by sharing this email from one of my readers that if you are feeling alone and defeated but are hesitant about reaching out, you will find some comfort.

Look at my follower’s words:

I am a struggling homeschool mom of two with a husband that can only work part time. This is my second year homeschooling and I feel stressed to the gills. I have an 11 yo son who has Asperger’s and ADHD and a 10 yo daughter with dyslexia/dysgraphia.
I made the mistake of unschooling last year and I regret it but I don’t have the funds to order a curriculum. My children are working in all the same grade levels.
I may have to go to work because of my husband’s health so I am trying to plan as much as possible. It’s overwhelming to put it lightly.
I have internet access and a mono color printer, oh yeah and Netflix. Is there anything you can suggest that can keep the tears from falling?
I am to the point of when telling my husband that we are out of toilet paper that makes me cry because he is trying so hard…. Thank you for reading :/

After I replied about wanting to help her, her response moved my heart even more.

Thank you Tina for your time. I am an emotional wreck right now and currently crying because this is the first time that I have reached out to anyone that doesn’t know me. I don’t want to send my children back to being bullied and put on meds.
I will not do that but everything seems so stressful right now and I am suffocating with everything that it takes to plan a school year. I have a goal to hopefully start on July 6th considering we have a lot of catch up to do with them being at a third grade level. If I start working I have to get on the ball and make a dent in this madness A.S.A.P! Thank you again Tina!

When You REALLY Have No Money For Homeschool Curriculum @ Tina's Dynamic Homeschool PlusFirst, I want to say THANK YOU for reaching out to me. This is something you should never have to bear alone.

And though I can’t completely say that I understand everything that you are going through, I have compassion and sympathy for you.

To give you practical help, let’s break this down into two parts.

One, I want to help you find peace with your present circumstances and two, I will give you specific tips and a starting point for curriculum.

Control What You Can.

I do understand your feelings about your husband’s health.

When my husband had a massive heart attack a few years back and I thought I would be raising my three boys alone, I realized I was not the invincible person I had always thought I was.

After nursing him back to health, I realized that trials have a way of strengthening us though we feel very weak at the time.

Of course we would rather not learn it that way.

I learned to control what I could and that really nothing mattered more than being together as a family because life is precious.  After I put things in perspective, I had a beginning point.

Letting go of the way things use to be before his health declined spurred me on to find new creative ways to homeschool and spend time together.

Homeschool Mistakes. It’s NOT About Forgetting

Another thing I learned along the way was that I didn’t want to exactly follow the popular saying to “forgive and forget” when it came to homeschool mistakes I made.

While I wholeheartedly endorse the thinking that homeschooling is about forgiving your past mistakes so that you can have the energy to move forward, it’s also a lesson in how I don’t want to homeschool.

Instead of carry feelings of guilt, turn those feelings of guilt into some get up and go.

It was just a lesson learned in how the unschooling approach did not work for your family.

You now have a clear direction of the way your family needs to go.

Lesson learned and now you will be a much better teacher because of it.

New Homeschool Beginnings

Next, though it may take you more time to put together your curriculum, if you are willing to work hard in poring over resources, you can just about homeschool for free and your kids receive an excellent education.

Spending a lot of money doesn’t always equate with having an excellent education.

Your upbeat attitude and eagerness toward learning even with the most minimal resources are way more important to success than an ample supply of curriculum with an unmotivated teacher.

One caution I will give you is to not get yourself so overwhelmed with poring over free resources constantly that you don’t have a beginning point.

It is important to pick a main or spine resource and stick with it though you can use other things to supplement it with.

Though I will give you numerous sites at the bottom to find more free resources that I think are worth spending your time at, I have also lined out specific curriculum suggestions that I have picked out uniquely for you.

My reasons for choosing these sites are because they are either laid out to help ease planning stress and some are interactive sites to help with the unique needs of your children.

LANGUAGE ARTS – 3rd Grade

Reading

Choose from Baldwin online living books to read together on line and fill in with other books you get from the library.

There are many grade levels to choose from at the Baldwin website and I have used it for many years.

Children with special needs are not evenly developed across the board (not any kid really is) so it allows you to choose grade level books based on their progress through the year.

Go through them and pick out the ones you want to read together.

Also, Jennifer over at Contently Humble has a wonderful list of free graded readers. You won’t run out but you will run out of time deciding which gem to do first.

One more wonderful resource for reading is by Jamerrill, which is the Ultimate Guide to Free Kindle Books (psssst, you don’t have to own a kindle to get the free kindle books).

Spelling

Free 3rd grade Spelling book. (200 pdf download.) Just look ahead at the lessons, plan, print and go slow. It’s laid out for you.

Vocabulary

Because children that have special needs do better sometimes with interactive content, use this site by Wordly Wise with interactive vocabulary.

The word is pronounced out loud, gives the part of speech and is used in a sentence.

If your children become overstimulated, then turn off the sound.  It’s already laid out for your children. If they finish one grade level, just go to the next one.

Copywork

To help their handwriting to improve as best you can, use free copybooks from copy cat books.

Remember too that they can copy small passages from history and science books but this gives you copywork already laid out.  And already laid out curriculum is easiest when overwhelmed.

Another backup for copywork is Amy over at Are We There Yet has the ultimate guide to free copywork if you run out of ideas or are short on energy.

Grammar

Free grammar pdf download for Grades 1 – 5. (141 pages.) This will help you to go back over the basics and to be sure you strengthen their grammar skills as best you can.

 MATH – 3rd Grade

Free pdf math download for grades 1 – 5. (229 pages)  Use this as a main math spine and use the parts you need to reinforce concepts and teach new ones.

In addition because ck12 elementary math is interactive, your kids can do some math on their own to give you a break as well.

Too, using part printed and part interactive helps to give you some planning help and still addresses the needs of your children.

SCIENCE – 3rd Grade

Though I have two free middle science books here on my site, they are middle school science books. I wanted to be sure you knew about them in case your kids love science and want to go ahead in grade levels.

However, for the time being use this free science book that is a 3rd grade level.

It is a free book online and it is interactive.  When the sound button is clicked, the science book will be read to your children. This will aid them in comprehension.

Again, this gives you a break too if you need to care for your husband, think about part time work or just need to find your calm point again. The kids can read this together or with you or you can choose the interactive portion where they are read to.

If you want to focus on one area of science, then check out these free guides, which are ones I picked out that I think your children will find fascinating based on their ages.

The Ultimate Guide to Studying Plants and Flowers
The Ultimate Guide to Studying Space
The Ultimate Guide to Studying Insects

HISTORY – 3rd Grade

You didn’t mention a specific time period you wanted cover, but here are some free things to use as a spine.

Heritage History books on line. Pick your time period.

America’s Heritage – An Adventure in Liberty. Three free levels to download; Elementary, Middle School and High School.

LibriVox – Has about 25 G.A. Henty books for free.

You know I have LOTS of free lapbooks and unit studies here AND they are in chronological order if you need them.

WHAT YOU CAN DO

Don’t forget to ask other homeschoolers if they are pitching out some unused or gently used curriculum.  Too, we had a homeschool co-op where we exchanged or borrowed curriculum.

Though you may already know, it bears repeating to not forget garage sales, thrift shops and used curriculum sales.  Don’t forget when family or friends ask about gifts for your kids, to steer it toward something educational that your children will like.

Near my last home in Texas we lived close to a big state park. So I checked into park programs that were FREE for the boys to join. They taught science and about nature and it was a fun time to get out of the house. We packed a picnic lunch and spent the day at the park.

Living overseas now, science materials and supplies are non-existent. I have to resort back to my thrifty ways by saving all kinds of material.

I keep and collect ALL empty bottles, jars, liter bottles, shoe boxes, empty toilet paper and papertowl rolls and other things I come across. We now have a nice stash of ready to go science supplies when we need them for hands-on science.

Though I haven’t listed free lessons for art, typing and music, I do have them too.  I wanted to be sure you got to read this in one afternoon and to not also be too overwhelmed, so I stuck to the core subjects.

Once again, I am so grateful that you reached out for support.  I care about you.

Though it won’t be easy, you certainly can homeschool successfully and I hope in some small way that I have eased your stress.

What about you? Do you have any other suggestions to help her?

Hugs and love ya,

Tina Signature 2015c

What If I Choose the Wrong Homeschool Curriculum

October 13, 2014 | 9 Comments
This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see my full disclosure policy.

What if I choose the wrong homeschool curriculum is at the top of the list of worries for new and seasoned homeschoolers alike.

However, I think on the flip side of worry is getting a shipment of new homeschool curriculum. It can be one of the most pleasurable moments in homeschooling. Don’t you just love the smell of new books? It just feels like you have it all together now.

But then, worry sets in. Will this be the right curriculum for my child? Will this year meet my expectations? We spend hours reading every catalog and website that we can as we pore over curriculum choices.

Many times we still are not sure if we have the best curriculum. Then we read those emails or posts on groups where one mom used something that is working so “perfectly” for her and her children.

And then we wonder what’s wrong with us. Doubt sets in about the choices we made at the beginning of the year and we have a gnawing pain at the bottom of our stomach.

If you are teetering about making a huge change, there are a few things that I have learned about choosing the wrong curriculum. Look at these 5 tips below that I hope will help you. What If I Choose the Wrong Homeschool Curriculum

(Incidentally, I love ALL the curriculum in this picture above and highly recommend it.  It worked beautifully for me in the years that I needed it.  But, what works one year for me, may not work for you. That is the key to determining if it’s the wrong choice for you.)

1.  There is no PERFECT curriculum.  Some years it is just about trial and error. There will be times when you pick something that is not what you need for that year or does not meet your goals. You will make some mistakes. That is okay because at anytime during the year you can switch.

Before you switch though, be sure it is the curriculum that is not working and not issues of scheduling, discipline or being overwhelmed. We might mistakenly think that the curriculum is the culprit of our day when in fact it could be other issues in our homeschooling. So give new curriculum a fair shake so to speak.

The opposite of that thinking is sticking with a curriculum no matter what. I have tried to stick to a curriculum because I begged my husband that I just had to have it, so I felt guilty in not using it.  What I have learned is that this can have detrimental effects on my kids.

It is not a waste when you switch because this is a lesson well learned in how your child learns best.

I am not encouraging you to not be frugal and make the decisions you and your husband make work, but balance that thinking with the hundreds and hundreds of dollars you would have spent in public school on school supplies not used, countless clothes purchased and otherwise frivolous things like a school fund raiser.

Too, if you keep your curriculum neat and clean you can resale it and recoup some of your husband’s hard earned dollars.

2. Don’t forget to read homeschool curriculum reviews.   iHN, which I am a proud member of reviews homeschool curriculum.  So be sure to check out the reviews because in reviewing curriculum, I try to give an objective summary of each one.

This means that I try to recommend which group of homeschoolers that a particular curriculum will work for and what you may need to consider if you end up using it.

Look here at the homeschool curriculum I have reviewed so far.

It is important to read homeschool reviews that are informative instead of biased.  Why? Because what may not work for you this year may be the “perfect” curriculum for another year or different circumstance.

More importantly, try to determine why or why not a certain curriculum worked for a family and see if you have similar circumstances.

3.  Take advantage of talking 1:1 vendors at curriculum fairs or either on the phone.  They spend thousands of hours tweaking their curriculum to meet our needs and most vendors want you to understand how best to use their curriculum.

Too, companies like Rainbow Resource, which has been around for a long time have staff that is well educated in the differences between curriculum. Use these free resources by asking them questions when you can’t find the answer in your own research.

Just the catalog alone from Rainbow Resource is an education in the differences between curriculum with their mini-reviews or write ups about various curriculum.

4.  Children are pretty hardy. Homeschooling in fear is not a good place to be at.  So don’t fall prey to the idea that we will have huge gaps in learning.

The truth of it is, everybody has gaps in their learning unless we all learned at the same school at the same time with the same teacher and we still would come away with differences in our education.  Our educational background and differences are what makes each of us unique.  Embrace it.

If you use a curriculum and feel you are somewhat behind in what your goals are, just remember children have a great reserve to pick up at a new point in learning and move forward.

I have done this more than I can remember. I made a bad choice with Mr. Senior 2013 in math beginning his middle school years and he got behind.  By high school, he was well ahead. Why? Because having made a better choice with math, he was highly motivated to move ahead because he loved math.

The same thing happened with Mr. Awesome with a spelling program in his elementary years.  One spelling program was not clicking with him, but after I changed he went up two grade levels because he now had a much better fit with the way he learned.

Not seeing tears, but a return of their love of learning was well worth any money I had spent previously. Just remember, your time is well spent investigating another curriculum if the one you are using is not making sense to your child.

sharing homeschool curriculum

(One mom in our group ready to share her homeschool curriculum with the group.)

5. Look to your local homeschool support.  Many times in our local support group, we would plan a park day for the kids, but it would be a curriculum swap or show and tell for us as the moms. Don’t you wish you could just rent curriculum for a week or two to see if it will work for your family?

As long as you respect copyright laws of publishers, you can take the curriculum home and give it a test drive. Many of my favorite programs I first put my hands on at a park day with my group.  Looking it over for a week or two gave me a much better picture if it would work for my family or not.

Curriculum is our blue print to see how we want to build the education of our children, but it is not the final building.  There are always changes and adjustments to any construction job. Sometimes the adjustments are huge, sometimes they are trivial.

Most important though is that when you are enthusiastic about learning and teaching any subject, that is contagious and rubs off on your children.

It is your attitude toward learning that matters more than any curriculum you choose. Your children will adopt the attitudes and examples you set.

Share your enthusiasm and passion for learning and your children will remember their unique educational heritage and not the wrong curriculum you chose.
