1. Coral isn’t a plant; it’s made of tiny animals called polyps. These polyps build hard skeletons that create massive reef structures.
2. Inside each coral lives a special algae called zooxanthellae. They share nutrients in a perfect partnership: algae provide food through photosynthesis, and coral provide a protected habitat.
3. Coral reefs cover less than 1% of the ocean floor, however they support over 25% of all marine species.
4. Coral comes in many shapes
Reefs include:
- branching coral
- plate coral
- boulder coral
- soft coral
- brain coral
5 . Coral reefs grow very slowly; most only grow about ½” per year.
This means some of the world’s largest reefs are thousands of years old, making them one of the oldest living structures on Earth.

Minecraft naturally builds coding logic, math skills, geometry understanding, and visual planning.

HOW TO MAKE A LEGO MINECRAFT CORAL REEF
First, Minecraft’s colorful underwater biomes look just like LEGO bricks brought to life. Recreating them with real bricks helps kids explore marine science topics in a hands-on way
The different types of coral you can find and collect in the warm ocean biome are:
- Tube Coral: Blue
- Horn Coral: Yellow
- Brain Coral: Pink
- Fire Coral: Red
- Bubble Coral: Purple
Kids can also build marine animals- turtles, dolphins, or even a blocky Minecraft guardian, depending on their skill level.
Take a look at Ocean Anatomy and compare the real coral shapes: branching coral, boulder coral, brain coral, and soft waving corals. Then challenge them to recreate each kind with LEGO bricks.
You will need:
- Sand colored baseplate
- Assortment of colorful LEGO bricks
Use a sand-colored baseplate as your ocean floor if you have one; we made our own by linking several smaller ones together. Using another plate to anchor them all.
Like everything else in Minecraft, the coral is blocky and comes in many colors. Use 2×2 bricks to create the block shapes.
Then stack them up just like you would blocks in Minecraft.
And continue to build them out to place coral all over your ocean floor until you have a colorful biome.
If you have green LEGO greenery, add some to give it more dimension and interest.
The turtle was so fun and easy to create. It is made from two 2×4 bricks side by side for the shell, a 2×2 for the head, and 1×2 legs.
To recreate the Minecraft dolphin I stacked 3×4 bricks two high for the body, then used 1x2s to create the flippers, nose, and a T shape for the tail.
Our sweet little axolotl was just a pink 2×4 brick with a few smaller pink bricks for legs.
Encourage your child to be creative and original with the creatures and plants they put in their Minecraft ocean.
