Letter sounds are way more important to teach than letter names which comes later for spelling.

However, for prereading skills, teaching letter sounds comes first at this age.

And one more tip, teaching short vowel sounds first, along with a few consonants sets a child on the road to reading.

But do not push a child. Most are not ready to read at this age, but need lots of time to explore outdoors and play.
