About goals, objectives, and scope and sequence.

You have to have objectives otherwise where would you head?

This is where you put your plan which are your goals to accomplish for the year. I have some links here that I have used over the years.

I normally place this to close to the front of my planner. By putting the objectives closer to the front I find it is easier to review them from time to time and at the end of the year.

Homeschool Planner

Also the purpose of a scope and sequence is for you to decide what concepts to cover {scope} and sequence {in what order to cover them}.

Instead of learning instantly how to lesson plan and understand the learning process, you can follow one already made. Use it as “guide” so that you can see what other similar curriculum providers are teaching at that time.

Placing these in your planner gives you an idea of what concepts are being taught which grade. Then you decide what works best for your learner.

Option 1. Add Scope & Sequence

Scope and Sequences we have added to our planner:

Christian Light Education – WOW, what a nice download. They have both elementary and high school. You can buy the scope and sequence to see what is in each booklet or you can download it for FREE on their site. The links are right above where the cost is for the booklets and this is how they look.

Important: The CLE links can change quite often. When a link is not working, take time to shoot me an email or PM so I can update it

A Beka’s Scope and Sequence – 16 page download for a scope and sequence for children ages 2 years old to 12th Grade. Just print off the pages you need.

World Book These are general curriculum requirements from preschool to 12th grade.

My caveat: As a seasoned homeschool mom, I want to assure you that if you are new to homeschooling please know it’s NOT the curriculum that teaches the child. We are not teaching a curriculum, we are teaching a child.

No amount of Godly curriculum will do us any good if we do not have the “hearts” of our children. It is by example, persistence and cultivating a love of learning that instills the passion for “more learning”.

So please do not get so caught up in standards that you forget that each child is “unique” and a gift. ADJUST to that child’s needs but use these scope and sequences as “tools”. DO NOT become enslaved to curriculum or testing.

Option 2. Add Your Goals and Objectives

This form below is for you to break down your objectives by subject.

Download here Goals & Objectives with End of Year Evaluation.

Option 3. Add General Goals

This form is more geared toward general goals for your homeschool, personal, health, and spiritual. This more sweeping view allows you to make more general goals.

For example, it would be absolutely appropriate to write down under the Homeschool box: Survive My 1st Year of Homeschool. For me, I am focusing more attention to my health. My boys have been real good about their health, I just need to be sure I make more time for myself.

I labeled one box Personal Goals because there may be something you might want to accomplish that is private or maybe something like financial.

You decide what you want to write there as I left that title more general.

Visual person that I am when I see the goals written down, I am reminded of them.

Plus, when you look back at the end of the year, it shows you made progress no  matter how tiny the step. There are 2 color choices here.

Objectives at a Glance Goals
This is another form for objectives in broad strokes and it is a 2 page spread where you jot down objectives by month.

It has January to December for you to jot down general goals and view them on a 2 page spread. I have found that as my kids got older, I wanted a more general form and this is also good if you have an only child because you don’t need as much room to write.

Option 4. Four Quarter Planning Sheets.

Look at how I created this from.

  • It’s divided into 4 quarters or 4 pages with three month calendars on each page.
  • It has a box at the top right to pen in whether you follow an academic or a physical year calendar.
  • So that the calendars can be used over and over, pen in the day of week so your calendar is current year ready. Note: (Not that you would do this, but remember the first of the month doesn’t always begin on Monday or Sunday. I know you know that, but you’d be surprised how giddy you can get when filling in a new form.)
  • Because you can choose when to begin your homeschool year, you determine which months are your first quarter, your second quarter and etc. Just put an X, highlight the quarter or place a check at the top right section. I love the flexibility of determining which months are which quarters.
  • On the calendar highlight or circle the dates you want to reach certain objectives, goals or projects and
  • then use the lined box to the right of the calendar to write down your thoughts, plans or objectives.
  • At the bottom of the page or the end of the quarter is a place for evaluation.

Option 5. Easy Goal Setting.

Sometimes, I have more broad goals and not something that fits into exact educational objectives. I just like having the options each year. You know how I feel about that. Too, sometimes I know, for me anyway, I tend to write down all that I want to do and have few reminders of what not to do for the year.  So the section I call “less of this” is just as important to me as I want to keep setting realistic goals each year.
