Free Art Notebooking Pack – Grade 4 (Other Grades too)

I have been trying to focus this month on finishing up some of those partly done units that I used one year.  My art notebooking pages are part of those items on my to-do list.  My goal is to have all 7 grades done.

Art is one of those subjective subjects meaning sometimes grades don’t matter.  So having all of them done, I hope to use the rest of them as I go along.

Free Art Notebooking Pack {Set 4}

I have completed grades 5, 6, and 7.  You can find them on my art unit page.

Today, I have completed grade 4 or Packet 4.

How to Use Art Notebooking Pages

Just to remind you of how to use them, I added the picture above to show you.

Both notebooking sets are almost the same except for one minor detail or one box.

One set has a sketch box at the bottom right and the other set has a text box at the bottom right.

You decide how much writing/research or sketching your child needs to do.  Too, you can mix and match the sets.  Download both and decide what you need that year.

For example, you can print one page for one piece of art work to sketch and print another page from the other set to write more facts on another art piece.

For each page, have your child record

  • the artist’s name
  • a few facts about the artist which you can find in the download on my site
  • the title of the art where the parenthesis are and
  • a few facts about the art

Then depending on which set you chose, your child will either sketch a small picture or write more interesting facts.

Ancient Maya Unit Study + {Notebooking Pages printable}

Today I have some Ancient Maya unit study ideas, free lapbook, and notebooking pages. Also, here is my page Meso-America for more ideas.

This week was a little busier for us as we try to get back into the swing of things. It was busier partly because I have now switched back to following the public school schedule of starting school in August.  It has been a longgg time since I followed it.

For the last four or five years, I have started my school year in January and really liked it because I have a break from workshops during the winter. It was just natural for our family to start a new year and new school year.

Now, I feel like a new kid starting my school year in August. Where is my book? Where is my pen? Where is my planner? Because we are still in the middle of our books, like math, it has made the transition easier this week. On top of that, hubby had more tests this week and some more scheduled next week, but all is good so far.

Slowly each day as we begin a new school year I add a little more to the day. Because we don’t completely stop schooling in the summer, it really is just a matter of getting the kids to school longer for the day. You can see how excited my middle guy is who so looks forward {not} to math.

It is nice when you have homeschooled long enough that the oldest son “tutors’ the next one. {love it}

A fruit smoothie for the fruit smoothie-holic and a few days later in the week got better as we started our unit study of the Mesoamerica world. This would include some of the countries of Belize, Guatemala, Mexico and the area of the Yucatan Peninsula. I explained in an early post about our how unit study unfolds. This one is no different. LOTS of information on the surface. We have three cultures we are reviewing: Maya, Aztec and Incas.

But before I go on though, I wanted to share a little bit from my heart because this unit study has sentimental meaning for me.  In my pre LBK {life before kids} I was am an adventurous soul. This area is one of the areas I visited and stayed for a while in. Here are just a few pictures of some of the gorgeous rainforest, that the natives call “bush”. You think my sons would recognize me in this picture? The jungles of Belize.

The bird of paradise flower just grew all around and the friends I stayed with would even chop it down to get it out of our way as we trekked through the jungle.

My friends even kept a toucan as a “pet”.

But it was the monkey that I enjoyed each day while I was there.

Taking pictures of the native surroundings that were off the “tourism” beat is where I spent my time. I wanted to get to know the people and culture not make the tourist rounds.

Just the “normal” every day things like the lady coming down to the river to wash fascinated me.

I still like to travel and hope to make a connection of what I learned about some of these countries and make it special to my sons now. Maybe I should dig out the rest of the pictures.

The countries we are studying about are yes, very hot and humid with lots of insects but the culture, people, wild flowers, blue waters, lush rainforest and history of the area are full of life.

Because I don’t put time limits on how long we learn or what we want to learn, we just roll with it until we are satisfied. There are three cultures to study here so I like to start off with some general comparisons and then narrow it down somewhat. We focused on the ancient Maya this week. Guess what that means for you? You know I love ya. I have some notebooking pages for you that we worked on and are still working on. I think  this unit just feels like it may need a lapbook too.

Ancient Maya Unit Study + {Notebooking Pages printable}

My notebooking pages for you today are about Hernan Cortes, one about the general comparisons of the three cultures, one about John Lloyd Stephens – the Father of Maya archaeology, and a geography page and one page that you could print off two copies of on the Ancient World of Maya to tell what your child finds interesting.

Also, I want to point out one thing about the culture of the Aztec and Maya and that is their religion included human sacrifices and well — lots of blood. I have one notebooking sheet that talks about that but I have my teens compare the valuelessness of shedding that human blood and the valuable blood of Jesus Christ.

This certainly could be overlooked with a younger set of kids. Because I have two teens I wanted them to understand or at least be introduced to that culture’s world views. My youngest guy was sensitive to their brutality and I wanted you to know. So with him I will focus just on the sacrifice of Jesus. Just giving you the heads up.

I was inspired by this poetry today as we delight in the study of the Mesoamerica.

“And then they said as they left, “We are going there to the sunrise, Whence our fathers came…”

From Popol Vuh, the most famous of the Maya Chronicles

Inuit Art, Arctic Circle + 10 Notebooking Pages & Free Resources

We kept on rolling with a unit study on Inuit Art, Arctic Circle and 10 Notebooking Pages

Focusing on some of the beautiful art work of the Inuit, we learned about soapstone carving and scrimshaw.

The Inuit often carved beautiful and elaborate masks and sculptures.

They used bone, ivory and animal antlers. Today, soapstone (a soft rock) is used too.

I find this point made by the Eskimo Art Gallery helpful in rounding out our definition of soapstone carvings: People frequently ask us for ‘soapstone carvings’, but this term is generally a misnomer. When Inuit Artists began sculpting in stone on a larger scale, their art became known as “soapstone carvings,” regardless of the stone used.

If you get a chance, look at some of the beautiful artwork done at that gallery.

Also, the Free Spirit Gallery was educational in understanding about the materials the Inuit used then and what they use today for their native art.

A lot of the shapes, as we learned, were quite simple and emphasis was put on enjoying the process of either telling stories through their handiwork or just being at one with nature.

Whale ivory was a popular material used too to carve figures either of their environment or even mythological creatures.

We also learned about the art of scrimshaw which is basically carving or etching bone used by Native Americans and then staining the surface.

Scrimshaw is also using pictures that told stories and they are usually carved on ivory walrus tusks and whale bones.

The boys tried their hand on simple carvings since we had a couple of bars of ivory soap laying around. I wished I had the bigger bars because it would have been easier to carve, but these worked too.

The boys heard the words carve and gathered up their dissection kit to use. I think any true wood carver might shudder at the sight of the tools they gathered to use in this project.

They tried a simple drawing first like the polar bear and are still working on perfecting it.

In the meantime, I have new printables ready for you.

I have 10, well actually 11 notebooking pages.

The Map It page is made in duplicate because one page provides blanks to label for some easy geography and the other Map It page has been labeled already so there is no writing involved.

The second page can be used as a reference page or by a younger child or because you feel your child has done enough writing.

The first set of printables focuses on the Arctic Circle, some basic geography and Inuit Art. The second set of printables focuses on the animals of the tundra.

I have a lapbook coming too on this unit and wanted to give you a heads up on some other minibooks I have created for animals. You may prefer to use the ones I have coming instead of the notebooking pages or you can use them in addition to the notebooking pages.

Do you remember this meander book on my Westward Ho unit? Well, this unit just calls for a tiny set of books like I used in the Westward Ho unit because there are so many more animals that we can mention. So if your child doesn’t want to use the animal notebooking pages, I have some meander minibooks coming on animals that will go in the lapbook.

Here is a glimpse of one mini meander book I have prepared on the Atlantic Puffin. As you can see, it will be just big enough for a few words to describe about each animal. Tiny still loves this meander mini book. And if you are like us you are doing lots of writing anyway, so I try to keep the lapbooks fun and light on writing.

I also wanted to give you a few more free resources that I have used this week and that have been particularly helpful in doing this unit study. Anymore there is so much free on the internet, it just takes a tad bit of time to organize it and that is normally all I have.

I was especially delighted to stumble upon these two free ebooks from the Free Spirit Gallery. Just addy your name and email to get them.

They explain about some of the art and materials use and are a very nice free resource.

All About the Inuit for Kids. This is an overall good and easy site to understand about the art, music and animals of the Inuit.

Venture Arctic Educational Supplement is a  10 page download that explains the soap lesson. This is easy enough to do with multiple ages. You don’t have to use a slice/dice kit like my boys wanted to, you can use simple toothpicks.

Here is another lesson plan on soap sculpture that is a 9 page download.

Here are some sites I will be using this week and in upcoming lessons.

Biomes: Land of the Inuit  A good lesson plan to compare modern day Inuit to those of the past. Most cultures like to be seen as progressive and the Inuit are no different either. This helps to move our children beyond thinking that the Inuit only live in igloo huts.

History Through Arts – 10 page download. The first few pages of this download are about the Inuit and gives an explanation of scrimshaw. It has vocabulary words and it is one of my “keepers” for this unit as reference because of the easy explanations.

Another soap sculpture lesson plan but this actually focus on stone and not soap. It helps to explain artistic style by viewing different angles.
