Some of our readers have been asking whether we’re going to keep our link-up going through the summer. The answer is – definitely!

You will notice one small change during the next two months though.

Instead of just sharing our favorite posts with you, starting next week, we’re going to take the opportunity to tell you more about those of us who have the privilege of co-hosting this awesome link-up.

Finishing Strong ~ Homeschooling the Middle & High School Years #13 Education Possible

Our favorite posts from last week:

Amy from Milk and Cookies enjoyed reading Educational Board Games for Kids and Teens from FundaFunda.

Amy really enjoyed seeing a list of family friendly board games that would appeal to tweens and teens. Sometimes kids from this age group forget how much fun simple board games can be.

There were a couple in Meryl’s list that she had never heard of before and will now be adding to her soon-to-buy list.

Her other favorite post was Middle School Math Contests, also from FundaFunda.

She has a huge soft spot for math, so any quality math post will be a favorite of hers! Amy really enjoyed this list of resources and contests.

Kyle from Aspired Living liked the Rhetoric Stage from Classically Homeschooling.

Each stage has it’s own unique challenges and joys, and Sara captures the essence of the Rhetoric Stage in this post. “We listen as much or more than we teach. The Socratic method is perfect for this stage. Ask leading questions, make the teens work through ethical issues, see the weaknesses of both sides of an argument, and determine what is right, what is wrong, and why.”

Isn’t this the goal of most homeschool parents, no matter which path we take?

She also enjoyed Review: Daily Grams from Tea Time with Annie Kate.

Kyle shared, “Like many homeschoolers, I absentmindedly proceeded down the path I had taken in public school and decided to teach grammar every year. Then just as my 3rd kiddo was going to begin grammar I attended a conference and three different speakers said that children do not need 12 years of grammar. In fact, many young children cannot grasp the abstract concepts of grammar. This was a light bulb moment for me.”

This post, highlighting Easy Grammar, shows how a formal grammar education can be achieved in less then one year. It is, as the Brits would say, “spot on”.

Heather from Blog She Wrote enjoyed reading Homeschool High School- How to Log Hours for High School from Tina’s Dynamic Homeschool Plus.

She said, “As a homeschooling mom with almost two high schoolers with very different learning styles, I found fellow co-host Tina’s post on logging hours for high school to be very helpful. I’ve also been dabbling with electronic vs paper and pen planners and working hard to merge the two happily. Thanks for some specific ideas on how to get the job done!”

Her other favorite post was Science Milestones: The Binomial Naming System from Eva Varga.

Heather shared, “I have a few favorite topics within biology that I love to teach and classification is one of them. Science Milestones make me smile and the binomial system is one of the legacies that Carolus Linnaeus left us from his work so long ago. Thank you Eva for bringing to light aspects of science many homeschoolers may overlook!”

Heather from Blog She Wrote enjoyed reading Homeschool High School- How to Log Hours for High School from Tina’s Dynamic Homeschool Plus.

Tina from Tina’s Dynamic Homeschool Plus loved Review: Henry Hudson by Ronald Syme from Tea Time with Annie Kate.

Tina’s interest was piqued by this book because last year when studying about explorers, she only found a handful of biographies that she considered worthy of reading by her middle school son. She will definitely be adding this book to her resource list.

She also enjoyed Board Games and Fun: Takenoko, Timeline, & Tokaido from Eva Varga.

She said, “Learning through games spans all ages and every family member can be involved. We really need to be sure we continue the fun of games through to the middle and high school years.”

Heidi from Starts at Eight enjoyed reading Poetry Happens from unSocialized.

Finishing Strong Week 8

The title definitely captured her attention. She said, “I don’t love poetry studies, because I am a black and white, tell it like is person, and all the reading between the lines of poetry tires me.”

She liked how poetry just happened at the dinner table for this family and they each seemed to know some poetry all on their own. You can also visit Magnetic Poetry, where magnetic tiles with words on them are given to you and you arrange them to make a poem!

Her other favorite post was Do More Than Just Enough from Livin’ in a Glass House.

Finishing Strong Week 8

Heidi shared, “I really appreciate Lynda’s thoughts on not just scraping by.” Lynda says about her son, “It makes perfect sense in his young mind to use the technology provided to take short cuts.” But then she reminds us all to do more than that. Do more than just the bare minimum, get your hands dirty and participate in life.

“This is a great reminder to remember to be grounded and be where you are, striving to live each day to its fullest,” said Heidi.

Megan from Education Possible loved the Homeschool Middle School Acrostic Poem from 7 Sisters Homeschool.

She said, “It was perfect for Poetry Month. I love working with acrostics with my kids. Plus it just made me laugh!”

She also enjoyed all of the FREE Online Curriculum Options for High School from Homeschool Gameschool.

“I love that we have so many options available for our teens. It’s easier than ever to help them be successful. The fact that these are all free is a huge bonus!” Megan said.

Heidi from Starts at Eight enjoyed Teens and Sleep, are they getting enough? from Livin’ in a Glass House.

The fact that her kids can get extra sleep when they need it is one of the reasons Heidi usually states for why she homeschools. She says, “I do believe in keeping a schedule, but being homeschooled allows our children to take the extra time to sleep when they need to.”

This post begs questions about teens, sleep, keeping a schedule, and how it all relates to their attitudes.

High School American Literature 3: The Immigrant Experience from 7 Sisters Homeschool was also one of Heidi’s favorites.

She loves historical fiction and thinks it is a wonderful way to expose children to history. A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith is the coming of age story of Francie Nolan at the turn of the 20th century in Brooklyn, where we are engaged in the throws of varied immigrants’ struggles to gain identity as “Americans”.

7 Sisters Homeschool also created a high school level study guide to accompany the book.

Susan from Education Possible liked Homeschooling Teens & Pursuing Passions at Living the Good Life With Kids.

She said, “It is wonderful to see teens finding and pursuing their passions. Through his love of gardening, Kyler is not only helping with the family garden, he is also taking the initiative to turn his hard work into a high school credit course.”

Susan also enjoyed Natural Disasters Lesson: Earthquakes! at The Usual Mayhem.

Susan shared, “Science is not my favorite subject to teach, but my kids love hands-on science activities. These lesson ideas include everything from fun facts and myths, to tectonic plates and seismic waves. Plus you get to eat the experiment when you’re done – it doesn’t get better than that!”
