Some of our readers have been asking whether we’re going to keep our link-up going through the summer. The answer is – definitely!

You will notice one small change during the next two months though.

Instead of just sharing our favorite posts with you, starting next week, we’re going to take the opportunity to tell you more about those of us who have the privilege of co-hosting this awesome link-up.

We want to give you a chance to learn more about each of us as well as what we write about each and every week on our own sites.

Our favorite posts from last week:

Amy from Milk and Cookies enjoyed reading Educational Board Games for Kids and Teens from FundaFunda.

Amy really enjoyed seeing a list of family friendly board games that would appeal to tweens and teens. Sometimes kids from this age group forget how much fun simple board games can be.

There were a couple in Meryl’s list that she had never heard of before and will now be adding to her soon-to-buy list.

Her other favorite post was Middle School Math Contests, also from FundaFunda.

She has a huge soft spot for math, so any quality math post will be a favorite of hers! Amy really enjoyed this list of resources and contests.

Kyle from Aspired Living liked the Rhetoric Stage from Classically Homeschooling.

Each stage has it’s own unique challenges and joys, and Sara captures the essence of the Rhetoric Stage in this post. “We listen as much or more than we teach. The Socratic method is perfect for this stage. Ask leading questions, make the teens work through ethical issues, see the weaknesses of both sides of an argument, and determine what is right, what is wrong, and why.”

Isn’t this the goal of most homeschool parents, no matter which path we take?

She also enjoyed Review: Daily Grams from Tea Time with Annie Kate.

Kyle shared, “Like many homeschoolers, I absentmindedly proceeded down the path I had taken in public school and decided to teach grammar every year. Then just as my 3rd kiddo was going to begin grammar I attended a conference and three different speakers said that children do not need 12 years of grammar. In fact, many young children cannot grasp the abstract concepts of grammar. This was a light bulb moment for me.”

This post, highlighting Easy Grammar, shows how a formal grammar education can be achieved in less then one year. It is, as the Brits would say, “spot on”.

Heidi from Starts at Eight enjoyed reading 5 Tips for Using Eight Grade as a High School Prep Year from Weird Unsocialized Homeschoolers.

The following quote really struck a chord with Heidi: “I really wish that I had tailored Brianna’s high school classes more to her interests instead of getting so boxed in with what would be expected from a traditional school setting. I lost sight of not following a broken model, which caused more frustration than there had to be for her high school years.”

As we are struggling through the end of our first child’s freshman year, I have to wonder if I am gong about it, or at least some of it wrong.

Besides this, Kris brings up some great points about things you can consider and be sure to have in order during your child’s 8th grade year.

Her other favorite post was How to Get Your Kids to Hate History from fellow co-host Education Possible.

Heidi shares, “I have loved so many in this series of posts that iHN members did. To take the angle of how to get your kids to hate something is both funny at times and eye opening as well.”

Megan reminds us all to step outside the textbook, step beyond all books as well and include hands on activites and related field trips, even watch a time period movie. These and many more great tips for teaching/learning/loving history are included in this post.

As Susan from Education Possible helps her son prepare for his first year of homeschool high school, she really enjoys reading all of the helpful posts in the Finishing Strong link-up.

Last week she loved the Measuring the Speed of Light with Chocolate from Tea Time with Annie Kate.

She said, “With fun and informative projects like this we look forward to continuing our “hands-on” approach as we begin homeschooling high school!”

She also enjoyed Teaching High School Subjects – You Have Options! from Sweetness and Light.

Susan shared that her son wants to include a variety of learning options for his first year of high school, including online, in-person, co-op and courses taught at home. She appreciated seeing that this is a plan that has worked well for other families too.

She said, “As a homeschooling mom with almost two high schoolers with very different learning styles, I found fellow co-host Tina’s post on logging hours for high school to be very helpful. I’ve also been dabbling with electronic vs paper and pen planners and working hard to merge the two happily. Thanks for some specific ideas on how to get the job done!”

Her other favorite post was Science Milestones: The Binomial Naming System from Eva Varga.

Heather shared, “I have a few favorite topics within biology that I love to teach and classification is one of them. Science Milestones make me smile and the binomial system is one of the legacies that Carolus Linnaeus left us from his work so long ago. Thank you Eva for bringing to light aspects of science many homeschoolers may overlook!”

Tina from Tina’s Dynamic Homeschool Plus loved Review: Henry Hudson by Ronald Syme from Tea Time with Annie Kate.

Tina’s interest was piqued by this book because last year when studying about explorers, she only found a handful of biographies that she considered worthy of reading by her middle school son. She will definitely be adding this book to her resource list.

She also enjoyed Board Games and Fun: Takenoko, Timeline, & Tokaido from Eva Varga.

She said, “Learning through games spans all ages and every family member can be involved. We really need to be sure we continue the fun of games through to the middle and high school years.”

Though we have been homeschooling since the beginning, we have always been quite eclectic in our approach. Meredith’s posts helped to clarify how we might strengthen some strategies to better suit the learning styles of my children.”

Sharla does a great job detailing specific, yet simple tips every parent should think about before it’s time to teach your teen how to drive. Even if you’re a couple of years away from this milestone, most likely it’s something you are thinking about and worrying over.

Megan said, “I understand her fear of letting go and trusting them on the road with other drivers. The only thing I can do to lessen my anxiety is to make sure they are as prepared as possible.”

She also loved Algebra Help for the Hopeless Homeschooler from Our Journey Westward.

Who hasn’t heard, “I’ll never use this when I grow up, what a waste of time!” over the years?

Megan said, “I think Real World Algebra, the resource Cindy shared, looks great! I try hard to make our lessons practical and I really like the idea of showing my children how math, specifically algebra, has real life application. Plus, the epitaph made me giggle!”
